Happy Sunday morning to you all! I come to you this morning with yet
another gem taken from my grandmother on our most recent visit. I think
I've completely cleaned her out now :)
This
sky blue sweater is a 1950's JC Penny purchase and I am in love.
Anything with a collar, really-give it to me! I actually purchased this
skirt with my grandmother also. One of my summers staying with her she
took me rummaging and I found this skirt and a matching brown polo. It
was one of my very first vintage finds. Who would have guessed it would
spark such an interest in fashion for me?
I sometimes think about
what my grandmother used to be like as a young girl. Most of my life
I've seen her as a strong farm wife/teacher who loves to learn new
things and garden up a storm. When I was out to visit the last time
though, she got really into finding all of her old clothes and seeing if
she could fit into some of them. I saw a different side of her and I
wonder if it's been stifled all of these years just a bit by her
circumstances. I think she's a girly girl at heart, and I'm coming to
see that maybe she and I are a bit more alike than I once thought when I
was a kid. I would visit her and feel so awkward because I felt like we
had nothing in common. Maybe the recent similarities I'm seeing is just
a product of me getting a bit older and all of that nonsense :) In any
case I am very grateful to know my grandmother and to carry her with me
in such a tangible way.
Also ppst! If you like this bag, you can be the proud owner of it by buying it from my shop here!
God Bless!

So great you can get to know more of your grandma's true personality. I def think it was a sign of circumstances and also of the times. My grandma always seems very stern but I think they just felt they had to, and my mom tells me she was always forced to dress up and do her hair and whatnot and that she LOVED the 70's because she could just wear jeans and grow her hair long and not style it. that's crazy to think now, especially for me since I never style my hair but am very grateful my mom passed down her values for hard work and love of the outdoors from her farmgirl upbrigning. anyway i'm rambling but I do think it's really neat because I've never gotten a chance to know my grandparents well. And of course it's always cool how many gems you get from her!

Ahh, that polka dot skirt is perfect for you, Katie! And I adore your shoes, too, and how perfectly this entire outfit goes together. :D You're too cute!
ReplyDeleteThat's so sweet about your grandmother! I feel like when we're young we probably don't appreciate the past as much as we should, either, and that might have something to do with it, too. But I'm glad you finally feel more connected with her, even if it took a few years and figuring out some things in common. :)
I love your shoes! And what a great top to have gotten from your grandmother. The light blue is a really great color on you.

Love, love, love that skirt! The whole look is really darling and even better when vintage pieces are family heirlooms!
ReplyDeleteThat's really such a lovely story about you and your grandmother. It's quite a sweet thing to get a glimpse into her life as a young girl and personality traits that you didn't see before. Reminds me of my grandmothers and definitely brought a smile to my face :-) The outfit is so classy and I'm loving every last piece of it.
ReplyDeleteAaaah polka dots, is there anything they can't do! Awesome look, the hairdo is fantastic as always ^_^
ReplyDeleteI have the same issues with my grandma, we were raised in such different time periods, that I feel we're miles apart. But, once I got to spend more time with her, little by little, the difference gap, became smaller :)
So cute - very 1950's chic and I love it! I bet your grandma was a pretty classy lady back in the day!
ReplyDeleteYou always look so classy and put together!

That black and white dotted skirt makes for such a bold and eye-catching look! Love it.
ReplyDeleteAlso, it is nice to see how relationships can still grow and change as we grow older. I didn't know my gramdmother well as a kid; they lived far away. But they moved closer when I was in college. It is strange; I was someone who did a lot to help care for her and that was sometimes very straining to everyone involoved but it has been nice to really get to know her, as a person, not just as "Gram."
That sweater is amaaaazing, and it's perfect with that skirt. Lovely as always!
