A Day of Hearts

Yay, it's almost Valentine's Day! I saved a very festive outfit for today, complete with lots of little red touches and this heart blouse belonging to my grandmother. It is one of those puffy, nylon blouses that were so popular in the late 1950's. I love it because so often I think of whimsical prints as something that is a new fad, but really vintage prints were full of whimsy and fun! I also donned a fun 1940's hat and some little green gloves I found a few days ago at a new flea market in town. They are absolutely the perfect color.
Also, be on the lookout for another remix tomorrow, I'll show you all of the ways I've worn this coat in the past!

I keep trying to convince Sean that red and mint are the perfect color combination and I want do decorate our house in those colors, but he is dead set against it. He just hates those two colors together, so I guess I will have to wear those colors as often as possible on ME instead! Ha, that'll show him ;)

So sorry I haven't been getting around to your blogs the past couple of weeks. I have been under the weather a bit and I am planning to do some blog hopping this weekend to read all of your fabulous posts!

Flock Together: Black, White, And Red All Over

Hello, hello! Katie here. I popped out of my warm house for just a couple of minutes the other day to snap a couple of quick photos before I scurried back inside and immediately donned my fuzzy socks once again. This dress of Kristian's from Shabby Apple certainly is a summery frock, but I was determined to make it work for colder weather with a much darker color palette.  It also is more red in person than I was expecting! I find that some dresses are more difficult than others to layer for winter. This one in particular has such a summery pattern and the weight of the fabric is light and airy. It definitely made me wish for summer!

Tuesday Tutorial- Coconut Lipgloss

 

Hello there! 

I have a pretty little tutorial for you today-coconut oil lip gloss made out of just a few ingredients! There is a lot of room for you to customize your gloss, so they were fun to make. I initially wanted to try this out because I bought some lipsticks that I ended up not liking the color of. This way I could still get some use out of them instead of just throwing them away! One thing I will warn you of is not to use too much of the coconut oil in your ratio of ingredients. It melts quite easily so you don't want it melting off your lips. It also is something that you may want to leave in your home and not take out and about in warm weather, as it will likely melt in your pocket :)

Here are the mandatory ingredients:

Coconut Oil

Lipstick (I used my old/broken lipsticks)

Small containers (I got mine at Walmart in the aisle with the small travel sized bottles)

Optional add ins (for flavor/smell):

Instant coffee

Cinnamon

Green Tea

Touch of Pink

Hello, hello! Good Monday morning to you. Did you all have a lovely weekend? Ours was quite good, but so cold I refused to take any outdoor photos all weekend. This has been the coldest winter I can remember and I am so looking forward to even getting into the 20-30 degree range. Until then I'll keep on bundling up and pretending I can handle it. Because it's Valentine's week I though I'd add a bit of raspberry pink into my life with this little tie-neck blouse. I also finally wore my kitty tights for the first time! They couldn't be more fun to wear and I'm happy their debut came with this black and cream paisley dress. Sean and I were out and about running a few errands when we noticed that a new flea market had opened up in town, so of course we had to stop and check it out! It was a very large place, with a plethora of beautiful old furniture and beautiful paintings and knick-knacks. I wanted every beautiful vanity and table in that place. It was great!

Have a wonderful day! My nights have been filled obsessing over the Olympics. Nothing like sitting on your butt watching others work out, right?! Love it.

Devotional: Combating Lies 2

Good morning all! It's time for a Sunday Devotional. My series right now is looking at different lies that we may believe about ourselves, and how to combat those lies using scripture.

The second lie is this: I am a failure, I am inadequate.

Key Scriptures:

2 Corinthians 3:5-6
Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God.  He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant—not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

This has been such an significant verse for me to remember. Especially in those times when I am stressing out and trying to make everything happen for myself, I just need to remember that my competence comes FROM CHRIST. Not by anything I can do, but what I can do through God that matters. If I am stressed about working with my kiddos at work, I can lean on God to grant me patience and love. If I am worried about keeping up a household, I can know that the most important thing in our household is serving God, and everything else will fall into place. Because when you put God first, those little stressors that plague your brain suddenly don't seem so important anymore. They fade away because the things of this world are not the things that matter. If I completely screw up dinner one night (or a million other things during my day), it doesn't mean I'm a failure. My identity is in Christ and how I show my love to others through my actions and words. As long as I have lived my life in a way that shows God's love to others, I have accomplished my primary goal of bringing others to Him, and that is what matters most to me. 
The phrase, "the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life." refers to the Old Testament law and how we should not lean on the Law as a means of our salvation, but we need to believe in Christ's death for us to grant us salvation.


Philippians 4:13
I can do all this through Him who gives me strength.

I believe this is one of my favorite verses of all time. It is pretty self explanatory, but for the sake of elaboration I will just say that when I fail as a human being, I can still accomplish great things through Christ!

Remix Friday- Grandma's Teal Coat

A very happy Friday to you all! Today's remix is another wintry one. This teal coat is one of my prized possessions. Described by my grandmother as her "first grown up coat", this teal trench coat made out of wool with a satin lining is truly special. She said it was the coat she got when she became a young adult and I can only imagine how stylish she must have looked while wearing it. It has slightly puffed sleeves and perfect pockets. Not to mention the length is absolutely spot on for wearing with all of my vintage skirts and dresses. Somehow she managed to keep this beauty in fabulous shape and I plan on doing the same. 

It is extremely interesting to me to see the progression of my style through these photos. When I first started blogging nearly four years ago I knew so much less about my personal style than I do now. This coat has always been a favorite though, through style thick and style thin!
