Hair Tutorial: The Poodle

Why hello there dolls! I hope you all had a lovely Fourth of July.
Today I'm going to show you how to do your hair up in just about the most fun style there is. It is a style worn most famously by the ever inspiring Lucille Ball and one that I just cannot get enough of. It will take any outfit-from high waisted jeans to a fun dress- to the next level!

Here is what you will need for this style:

I wash my hair the evening before I want to wear this style and put it in curlers. You can use different sized curlers depending on the length of your hair and how tight you want the curls to be. I use curlers about 1 1/2 inches in diameter for this style. Sleep with the curlers in, and then wear your hair in a cute scarf to run your errands in the morning if need be ;) haha-totally optional of course!

Before you remove your curlers, make sure that your hair is completely dried, otherwise the curls will just pull right out. When you take out the curlers, pull all of the curler out in one motion so that the curls stay in tact, you don't want them to pull out or this style will be much more challenging.

Hopefully you'll have bouncy, Shirley Temple style curls when you're finished!

Tip your head upside down and smooth the back of your head with your fingers. You want the back of your hair to be smooth and most of the volume to be on top of your head.

To help the style stay in tact, begin twisting the back of your hair a bit so that it stays smooth and is easier to pin. When you have a little twist, begin using wave clips or bobby pins to secure the twist near the top of your head. Burrow it in the curls so that it is less noticeable as you wear this style.

Once you have the twist secured, the tricky part comes into play.  You'll want to grab your curls from the bottom and bring them up and around the top of your head. Play with it a bit until your hair is sitting in the position you want it to. You can push it to the side, or leave it right on top-it will look so cute either way! This is where you get to make the style your own.

When you have the curls piled in a way that you like, start pinning like your life depends on it! Take your bobby pins and put them through the curl as you push them down towards your head. When you are finished, move your head around, to the side, etc. to make sure that your style is secure and take notice of any wayward curls, pinning them back in as you go.

Make sure to secure the whole look with some good hairspray, I always use Dove :) Spray up the back so it stays smooth, and especially spray the curls so that they don't begin to pull out.

Now, put on your best Lucille Ball face and go have yourself some vitameatavegamin!

I am going to warn you ladies openly-this style takes a bit of practice! Don't become discouraged if it takes you several tries to pin your hair up. You just need to keep trying and you'll get it in no time!

Have fun with this one and be sure to let me know if you try it! I'd love to see some other ladies rocking this style :)

God Bless!

  1. Yup, your hairstyles never cease to impress... I probably couldn't even get the curling down on this one correct. I'm actually a little afraid of curling irons--always afraid that I'll burn my hair, or an ear, etc. But the end result is so so pretty! A wonderful collection of curls upon your pretty, pretty head. :D

  9. I used to really like doing this style (as you say it can be worn with jeans or with fancier looks, which I loved), but found it so much harder to do with longer hair. So I was excited to see you do this tutorial. I think the key seems to be you taking your curls from the ends and brining them up. Also the tip about leaning over was somehow something I'd never thought of either. Thanks for this!
