This vibrant yellow dress was calling to me amidst the racks of 70's and 80's horror pieces that were cluttering up the vintage section at my thrift store. It reached out it's bright sunny hand and waved at me like a old friend. I don't think I own a piece quite this vivid in my closet! When I went to try it on, I almost questioned the fit of it a bit, until I realized that the two front slits were pockets and then I was completely sold. Any dress with pockets is a no brainer-it's coming home with me! I wanted to go for a completely authentic vibe to the era, so I donned a headscarf in a way I haven't really worn before. People look at you so funny in church when you wear a scarf like this! They're like, "I can't tell if she's a really well dressed 65 year old, or if she's a young person with weird style..." Story of my life :)
I really loved the combo of peachy pink and bright yellow though, who would have ever thought of that combination could work? Certainly not me, until now!
Alright, so funny story about this photoshoot. I always take pictures outside my apartment complex, at the risk of being seen by passerby's. I never thought however that people could be watching me from atop their balconies! So some lady is out on her balcony smoking and apparently just watching my husband taking photos of me on the sidewalk and she shouts, "I love your outfit-what's your inspiration?" She said it in just this really weird way that made me not sure how to answer her so I said, "Thanks! Um...the 1960's? I really love vintage fashion." And she said, "Oh, well you look like you're going to a wedding, I've never seen a dress that color before!"
Haha, I am so socially awkward you guys that I just nodded and pretty much ran inside because I was so embarrassed. Then I spent the next five minutes asking Sean if I was socially awkward, which we both knew was YES OMGOODNESS FOR SURE.
So, the picture down below is me trying to interact with that lady on the balcony. Oi vey.
Well Dahlings, Sean and I are headed off to my hometown for a grad party this weekend! I am really excited as I haven't seen my parents in what seems a good long while and I am thankful for the excuse to go home and hug my mama :)
So, have a blissful weekend everyone!
God Bless,
KJA

I think this looks wonderful on you, Katie! The yellow is just fantastic and the fit is great!
ReplyDeleteAlso, I totally hear you on the weirdness of photo onlookers - I got whistled at by the garbage man while out taking photos a few months ago. With a big pregnant belly, it would be REALLY WEIRD if that were to happen now!! lol
I love this! It has a super Mad Men vibe going in the best way possible! The yellow is amazing!
ReplyDeleteOh that is always my worst fear with taking photos, having someone see and ask what I'm doing! I'd probably react about the same way as you!
Have a fun weekend seeing your family!
Soooo I'm pretty sure you're the only gal who could pull this off. Seriously, Katie, you look like you stepped out of a time machine! You've got all the details right--the hair, the headscarf, the colors... so perfect! You really hit the target with this one. I adore your pretty lace gloves as well.
ReplyDeleteAn old person or a young person with really weird style... ha! Whatever.
And that little tale about the old lady... oh my gosh, that's too funny. But she sounded so interested in what you were doing! You could have just said, "Oh yup, taking some pre-wedding pictures!' hahaha. But I can understand that you ran away. You're really precious.
Have a safe trip to your hometown!!
Looooove the bright hue!!! And it's OK to be a little awkward: if you're too polished all the time, it's not very endearing is it? :) I'll bet you dashing inside all cute made that lady smile!

Oh, Katie! This dress was made for you! The color is spectacular and it has the perfect 60s shape. And I'm incredibly socially awkward as well, so I feel you! At least the woman liked your outfit, right? haha
ReplyDeleteWow this dress was made for you. Incredible. My new favourite of yours. I love how vibrant it is. You accessorised it perfectly. I get so self conscious taking photos, I would not know what to do if someone started talking to me from the balcony!
ReplyDeleteOh my word, if I were one of the Flock Together ladies, I'd be crossing my fingers you'd put this dress up for a swap soon ;)
ReplyDeleteHaha, it's gorgeous! This canary yellow color is stunning, and despite what you say, the fit is really good on you. I adore your old-lady, vintage style ;) Hahaha! Its a breath of fresh air.
Also, I couldn't help laughing out loud when I read about your interaction with that woman on the balcony. Oh man, I'm so paranoid when I'm out in public taking photos. This is why! I'm super awkward when I realize someone is observing the process. Its such a wierd thing to try and explain, you know? Like, "oh yeah, I'm just a fashion blogger so I take pictures of my outfits."
I feel as if people must think I'm vain from the amount of pictures I take of myself for the sake of my blog -_-

oh. my. gosh. this whole outfit is something i would pin to my inspiration board in my craft room. i seriously think i will print this outfit and tack it on! you have such a wonderful taste in clothing.
ReplyDeletewith the lady who was at your apartment, that is totally something that just happened to me the other day. most of the time, people just stare and don't stay anything though. which i don't know what is more awkward though?! haha.

Yes yes YES! This is SO YOU! The color is so happy, and it fits you so well!
ReplyDeleteBaahahah, this happens waaay to often to me :D
ReplyDeleteWhenever we take photos there are always people perching on the balcony or on the street, just stopping and staring, and asking silly questions :D Sometimes it's fun, sometimes it annoys me.
Socially awkward or not, you are beautiful! The dress is such a sunny piece, it makes me warm ^_^
This dress is perfection. I think I would be tempted to wear it every day- the accessorizing possibilities are endless! I love how you styled it- so true to the era! You are lovely.
ReplyDeleteI agree, it fits you perfectly! Quite lovely. I have to admit, your style is so different from anyone I know and I likely will never wear anything like your outfits, but I just love looking at them! Props to you for wearing what you love even if it's not what everyone else is wearing!

Oh my goodness, that dress fits you like an absolute dream - that color is just perfect!
ReplyDeleteBahaha, I love how you have ladies yelling at you from balconies. Isn't it awkward when people can you see you? My roomie and I took pictures a the train station and I had a guy who had thing for me blow his horn as I was posing... yeahhhh, some hilarious bloopers with terrified faces came out of that one.
Hope that you had a fantastic long weekend, hon!
xoxo,
Laura
